New PULSAR interdisciplinary opportunity for students with language interests!

PULSAR (Program for Undergraduate Language Science Ambassadors)
http://languagescience.umd.edu/center/pulsar/

Description:
PULSAR, or the Program for Undergraduate Language Science Ambassadors in Research, represents a new interdisciplinary training opportunity geared towards undergraduate students. The University of Maryland has the largest and most integrated team of language scientists in North America, and the PULSAR
program allows undergraduates to tap into this unique resource, providing them with opportunities beyond those found in their primary major.

The PULSAR program develops students’ abilities in integration, communication,
discovery, and leadership – skills that are in high demand in today’s society. It
does so by building on a highly successful interdisciplinary graduate program that
has run since 2008, and which has already created a community of 100+ students
and faculty from 10 departments.

Members of PULSAR will join a broad community of students, researchers, and faculty from areas such as Computer Science, Psychology, Hearing & Speech Sciences, Electrical Engineering, Human Development, Special Education, the iSchool, the School of Public Health,
Linguistics, and the School of Languages, Literature, and Culture. As a member of PULSAR, students have opportunities to build their resumes, develop a relationship with a scientific mentor, and become a member of a strong, collaborative group of peers. With the PULSAR program, we aim to provide undergraduate students with a breadth of experiences and training that can prepare them for careers in research, technology, education, health, and public policy.

Benefits of Participation:
• participating in innovative interdisciplinary training
• collaborating on a language science research project
• assistance finding a laboratory experience that matches one’s research interests
• developing research skills not normally available to an undergraduate student
• working with fellow students on scientific outreach activities to the community
• broad academic coursework in the domain of language science
• learning to communicate with diverse groups
• participating in opportunities for professional development, public speaking, and leadership
• potential funding for activities, research, and travel
• opportunities to participate in international activities, and host international visitors
• being an integral part of the largest language science community in North America

Activities for Ambassadors:
PULSAR scholars:
• Interact with others interested in language science through joint seminars and community
activities
• Engage in community outreach activities, including high school science fairs, Maryland
Day, etc.
• Assume leadership roles and gain leadership experience
• Become involved in research, either through serving as a research assistant or pursuing an
honors project
• Participate in additional faculty-student joint activities (such as “Meals with the Mentor”)
• Present their research in multiple venues, including the Undergraduate Research Day.
To be a successful PULSAR scholar, students should:
• Commit to PULSAR for 4 semesters.

Expectations, Requirements, and How To Apply:
o Applications can be submitted any semester between the fall of the first year at UMD and the spring of the
second year. If accepted, the program activities will begin the following semester.
• Take a total of 15 credits of language science related coursework (generally, 1 prerequisite
course and 12 additional credits); With the exception of the prerequisite course, these credits
must be outside of the primary major, but can be part of a minor or second major; this
expectation is intended to provide interdisciplinary breadth in language science education.
• Serve as a research assistant or language-science-related intern for a minimum of 2 semesters
(generally 6-10 hours/week), or pursue an honors project; these activities can be either within
the student’s major or outside of it.
