Maryland Parents Association Student Scholarship Awards!

Applications are currently being accepted for the Maryland Parents Association Student Scholarship
Awards. The scholarships provide assistance to current undergraduate students in good standing who
may be unable to continue their education at the University due to extenuating personal or family
financial circumstances. Thanks to the generosity of Chatham, T. Rowe Price Foundation and parent
donors, scholarships of up to $2,000 per student will be awarded for the 2014-2015 academic year. A
minimum of 12 scholarships will be awarded.

CAPER Research Assistant Position!

Undergraduate Research Assistant Position
Center for Addictions, Personality, and Emotion (CAPER)


Description:
The Center for Addictions, Personality, and Emotion Research (CAPER) within the UMD Psychology Department is seeking an undergraduate research assistant for a study examining the differences in decision making between cigarette smokers and non-smokers. The Lab is interested in studying what is involved in this human tendency to change preferences to the immediate, but smaller reward instead of waiting for the bigger, better option. The Lab relates this process to substance abuse, specifically smoking cigarettes, where the immediate choice may be the gratification of smoking, but the latter option is the health benefits of choosing not to smoke. While investigating what is involved with this decision making process, the research will also involve applying a strategy that utilizes SMS text messaging to attempt to help people stay committed to the future bigger, better reward.  

Responsibilities:
-Minimum 6 hours per week
-Commitment for one complete term
-Data Entry
-Administer questionnaires to participants

 Qualifications:
-Prerequisites: PSYC 100 or relevant coursework in social science, health, or economic related fields.
-3.0 GPA or higher
-Previous research experience preferred
-Experience working with SPSS and Excel preferred

Federal and Global Semesters still accepting applications!

The Affective Science and Physiology Laboratory (ASPL) in the Psychology Department at the University of Illinois at Chicago (Dr. Stewart Shankman, Director) seeks a Research Associate to assist in studies of mood and anxiety disorders.

Description:
Research in the ASPL focuses on basic mechanisms underlying mood and anxiety disorders. Specifically, we investigate behavioral, physiological, neural, and genetic aspects of reward and threat processing in individuals with mental illness and their family members, as well as in healthy individuals. By achieving a better understanding of the processes that cause and maintain mood and anxiety disorders, we hope to contribute to the development of more effective preventative and treatment interventions.

Responsibilities: 
 - Manage and coordinate recruitment of participants for experiments run in the laboratory. This will involve managing contact with area clinics, placing newspaper and Internet ads, conducting initial phone screenings with interested individuals, and scheduling laboratory visits.
 - Conduct formal assessments with participants, including diagnostic interviews and neuropsychological testing.
- Conduct experiments under the direction of the PI. This will involve applying psychophysiological sensors, running experimental tasks and data acquisition software, and session set-up and clean-up while adhering to established protocol and maintaining rapport with participants.
  - Maintain regulatory correspondence with Institutional Review Board and funding agencies.
  -General care and upkeep of the laboratory, including inventory and ordering of supplies and management of lab personnel including undergraduates.
- Process psychophysiological data, including EEG, EMG, ECG, and fMRI data.
- Maintain study databases.
- Analyze data under the direction of the PI. Analysis is likely to include cleaning data in Excel, analyzing data in SPSS, SAS, and/or MATLAB, and creating charts, graphs, and other reports for publication.

Qualifications: 
B.A. or B.S. in Psychology or a related field is required. A minimum of one year related research experience. A Master's degree is a plus.

Early Social Cognition Lab Manager Position!

The Lab for Early Social Cognition at the University of Maryland College Park, under
the direction of Dr. Jonathan Beier, is seeking a part-time lab manager. This one-year,
20 hours/week position will begin in June 2014.

Description:
The successful applicant will coordinate the lab’s research investigating social
cognitive development in infancy through early childhood. Our research focuses on
children’s understanding of social interactions and social relationships; specific topics
include representations of intentional agency, relations such as affiliation and
dominance, and social motivations toward others. We use a variety of behavioral
research techniques, from looking time and eye-tracking methodologies to more
active measures of children’s social evaluations and behaviors.

Responsibilities:
This position offers a balance of organizational and research duties, including 1)
data collection and analysis, 2) stimulus construction and design implementation,
3) supervision of undergraduates, 4) interacting with children and parents, and 5) lab
and office management (e.g., budget, IRB, equipment purchases and maintenance,
lab website, protocol updates, and more).

Qualifications: 
Minimum requirements are a bachelor’s degree in psychology or a related field within
cognitive science, at least one year of relevant research experience, and excellent
communication and computer skills. Candidates must be able to work both
independently and in collaboration with other researchers, have strong multi-tasking
and organizational skills, be comfortable interacting and being silly with young
children, and must always present a friendly face to families. The ideal candidate will
have considerable experience with children and proficiency with statistics, web
development, video coding, and experiment presentation software. Experience with
programming (particularly, MATLAB) and eye-tracking methods is a plus.
The lab is part of a strong community of developmental researchers, both within the
Department of Psychology and across many other departments on campus. The
University of Maryland, College Park is part of the greater DC area, with easy access
to downtown Washington by subway.

Each year the Department of Psychology selects one undergraduate student to deliver a 5-minute speech at its commencement ceremony.  The theme of your speech is entirely up to you so long as it in some way reflects the significance of graduating from the University of Maryland with a graduate or undergraduate degree in psychology.

All graduating seniors are encouraged to apply and semifinalists will be selected on the basis of the fit with their theme and their record of academic excellence and outstanding contributions.

Dr. Tracy Riggins and Dr. Elizabeth Redcay in the Department of Psychology at the University of Maryland College Park are seeking a full-time Research Assistant beginning June 2014. Research in our labs investigates the development of higher order cognitive abilities (such as memory, social cognition, and executive function) with a particular emphasis on memory using functional magnetic resonance imaging. (1) conducting experiments with young children and adults (including: recruiting, scheduling, and data collection); (2) analyzing behavioral and neuroimaging data; (3) training and supervising undergraduate research assistants; (4) performing general administrative duties, including data management and maintenance of budgets, lab web pages and participant recruiting systems; (5) programming scientific experiments and developing experimental stimuli, (6) assisting with IRB protocol creation and compliance, (7) conducting library searches and literature reviews to assist in manuscript preparation; and (8) providing general support for the PI and other researchers in the
laboratory including, but not limited to, purchasing and maintaining lab equipment.

Qualifications: 
Recommended background and skills include: Bachelors degree in a related scientific field (e.g., psychology or neuroscience); previous research experience with human subjects (preferably using fMRI); the ability to work independently; keen attention to detail; and the ability to interact warmly and professionally with parents and children. Strong computational, organizational, managerial, problem-solving, and analytic skills are essential. This is a full-time position with benefits and has a 2-year minimum commitment with the possibility of renewal. This position is contingent on availability of funding.
